Sydenham Rubies 18, Claremont 26 RUBIES started the match with the first goal but were unable to capitalise, despite good pressure from Rachael Coles and Debbie Chapman, but Claremont’s shooters were on great form, quickly taking the lead 9-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Helen Martin worked tirelessly at centre, linking well with Emma-Jayne Brown, and both players making some good passes into the circle.
The score moved to 15-5 at half time and soon became 24-9 moving into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was much more controlled by both ends of the court for Rubies, with excellent defending from Cornish and Chapman allowing Claremont only two successful shots at goal.
Excellent movement from Abi King and accurate shooting from Hannah Read allowed Rubies to reduce the deficit.
Helen Martin was player of the match.
* SYDENHAM Under-12s played four matches at a tournament in Wells.
With accurate shooting and great defence, the team supported each other well.
Lovely centre court play from the youngsters, including many interceptions, helped the team to three wins against Purnell (7- 1), Bridgwater 3 (60), Paulton (7-3) and one loss against Galmington (8-3).
Team: Kirsty Richards, Paige Currie, Jess Bull, Grace Morris, Tilly Milburn, Katie Rowles and Georgia Milburn.
* THE Under-16s finished runners-up in the league following a good display at the weekend.
Their first game was against Well and at one point, Wells held a five goal lead, but the Sydenham players were determined to bring themselves back into the game, and with fabulous play from all players, they won the game 27-24.
Their second game was against Galmington who have not yet lost a match in the league, and unfortunately, Sydenham were unable to stop them on this occasion either, with Galmington winning 27-6.
Team: Megan Walford, Chelsie Coombes, Tanisha Birch, Millie Burridge, Nicky Elkins, Dominique Creedy, Georgia Edmundson and Leanne Wegg.
